Considered the world's first 'laptop', or portable computer, the 'Osborne 1' released in 1981 had 64K RAM, weighed 24.5 pounds and had a 5 inch monitor...How times have changed!

Google has finally released the Chromebook. A petite, lightweight browser-only notebook computer that runs on Google’s Chrome OS. The idea is that you use “the cloud” — that is, the internet — to replace many of the functions traditionally handled by the computer's hardware. This means that service companies worldwide can provide their field staff and managers with a Chromebook to help schedule their staff, send job details and capture information easily from the field. What's great about the Chromebook is it's inexpensive and allows you to easily and quickly access Connect2Field wherever you are.

Here's our Top 10 reasons why the Chromebook is a fantastic idea for Field Service companies:

1. It's inexpensive and simply browser only: you have almost instant access to your data hosted in the cloud as well as Email and internet browsing.

2. There is no need to run anti virus software: it has many layers of security built in.

3. You can access job details on a large and clear screen: anytime, anywhere.

4. It's lightweight: you can transport it easily from the office, to the field and home!

5. Multiple person secure useability: A simple Gmail login is all that's required, and multiple users can use the same device but all data is personal & secure.

6. 100% security to your vital business data even when your notebook is stolen or lost: Your entire data is stored on the cloud.

7. Brilliant battery life: Even if working away from the home or office all day, the Google-promised 8 hour battery will never fail you.

8. Access to millions of Web apps through Chrome Web Apps store (Including Connect2Field): download any kind of apps which will be useful for business purposes such as Office 2010 Web Apps for Chrome.

9. Wi-Fi and 3G are built-in features of the ChromeBook: access the net wherever you are on 3G, or wherever has an available Wifi connection.

10. With minimal fuss the Chromebook will get faster over time: ideal for those with hectic work schedules as automatic updates mean you will never need to waste time updating your device manually!

Google Chromebooks are available in stores now from Acer & Samsung priced between $350 and $500

Maybe never completely, but 'paperless' is a word we hear thrown around constantly in business in the current climate. At Connect2Field you may have heard us mention how the software can help your business on its quest to becoming paperless.

But what exactly IS a 'paperless office'?

A 'paperless office' is a work environment in which the use of paper is significantly reduced or eliminated altogether. This is done by converting documents and other papers into digital form.

Some benefits of a 'paperless office' include:

- Saving money
- Saving time inputting data, and in turn boosting productivity
- Saving space - no more messy desks or hundreds of overspilling folders and filing cabinets!
- Making documentation and information sharing easier
- Keeping personal information more secure - you can track individual accesses to documents
- Helping the environment by reducing actual paper and ink/toner use (which contains some dangerous heavy metals and non-renewable oils)

Not only can this concept be applied inside your office, but it's important to note that it can be extended to include work completed 'in the field' - which is particularly relevant to clients of ours whereby they may work in particularly busy or potentially dirty environments.

The benefits to being 'paperless in the field' include the following:

- Eliminating the risk of losing paperwork
- Eliminating the risk of damaging paperwork
- Increasing security of documents (documents are inevitably more vulnerable when outside of the office environment!)
- More accurate maintenance of data
- Reducing copy costs and implication on the environment

Undoubtedly, the 'paperless office' is the way forward for businesses. It is no longer a concept only accessible to large corporations with plenty of money and resources, but also to small and medium businesses. The great thing about using cloud hosted software is that it's accessible from anywhere, on a wide variety of devices so purchasing software or software licenses for everyone working within a business is no longer necessary.

If you'd like any more information on how connect2field can help your business moving forward, or if you are currently using the software and have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to Email us at support@connect2field.com.

Did you know that on June 30, 2000 President Clinton signed the Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act in the USA using his electronic signature ID, and established the validity of electronic signatures for commercial purposes in the USA? Probably not, we didn't - but it illustrates the way in which businesses are moving.

In this day and age, as everything is fast becoming primarily online/electronic based and paperless (a word we love at Connect2Field) and the ability to sign electronically potentially makes businesses significantly more efficient.

We here at Connect2Field love it when we are able to announce new features to all of you. Every step of our development is aimed to make life easier for you and your business.  Undoubtedly a crucial part of any job, capturing client's signatures for confirmation of a job is now available through the software.

Don't worry if you are one of the less 'tech-savvy' ones out there, there are instructions here detailing each step of how to use it: http://help.connect2field.com/spaces/help/manuals/index/lessons/31389-How-To-Capture-Clients-Signature-as-Job-Conformation.

Essentially, the client signs the touch-screen with a screen pen...or even their fingers will do (or a twig, but we wouldn't recommend this)!

The signature is then uploaded as an image file and viewable on the Admin job central screen - all you need to do is click on the job number and view the 'documents' associated with that job. It's as easy as that!

We always love to hear your feedback, so please let us know how you get on with it or if you'd like any more information.
